Maximizing Your Trips

There are many ways to take full advantage of all there is to discover and absorb during your trip. Here are a few suggestions that will lead to a multifaceted and rewarding trip experience:

  • Be open-minded! The act of traveling itself is not always a perfect experience, but it can lead to near-perfect memories. Expect some delays and be ready to make a change to your itinerary if necessary due to weather, a labor strike, etc.
  • Keep in mind this quote by Henry Miller, "One's destination is never a place, but a new way of looking at things."
  • Pay attention to your pre-trip classroom lessons. Seriously! If you are knowledgeable about the places you are visiting, there will be such greater enjoyment and meaning for you.
  • While the places you visit may be the major reason for your trip, enjoy the other experiences as well - spending more time with your friends or classmates, learning to share a room with up to 3 other people, and getting to know your teacher or group leader in an informal setting.
  • Keep a journal of your trip. You will be happy later that you have a reference for the places you went, the restaurants you ate at and the types of food you tried.
  • Don't be afraid to meet new people. There is so much to gain from taking some time to talk with locals.
  • If you would like a picture of a local, please be curteous and ask permission first. Most people won't mind at all, but everyone likes being asked first.
